Title: Seeking the Light / Year 2020 / Medium: Mixed media on canvas / Dimensions: 52” x 38"
At the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, a dear friend who was suffering from depression was found dead in his apartment by his mother. Me and other mutual friends have been reaching out to him and even arranged for him to move to California months before the tragedy. Sadly, he didn’t make it. Few weeks after his tragic death, I dreamt of him wearing a bright yellow shirt walking away and ascending towards a ball of light just as bright as his shirt. As soon as I woke up from the dream, I painted this art work in his honor. Although the situation was tragic, in the dream I saw him at peace and walking away from the cruelty of this world. He walked away until his entire self vanished into the welcoming embrace of the eternal light. One day in December 2021, after another friend took his own life, the voice in my head pushed me to revisit this painting and inspired me to make the source of light even brighter. I knew deep in my heart that these two friends who passed both were seeking the light that would give them the eternal peace they long so yearned. While the original title of this art work was I SAW YOU WALKING AWAY (IN YOUR YELLOW SHIRT), I decided to change it to SEEKING THE LIGHT, with the realization that every single human being is seeking for the light that brings him/her the joy and comfort.
